Named for the mountains that surround the Priorat, the Monsant has many of the same qualities of its neighbor- namely high elevation to provide freshness and minerality to the wines and a generous climate resulting in richness and concentration. A blend of old vine Garnatxa and a modest percentage of younger Syrah, Mas Donis comes from a complex mixture of soils ranging from alluvial clay and limestone, to sand, granite and slate.
Similiar to a Cote-du-Rhone, but the granite and schist terroirs here could not be more different than the calcareous soils of the Rhône valley. With time and experimentation – moving from barrel aging to aging entirely in concrete and selecting fruit from some of the oldest Garnatxa in the village, Mas Donis has evolved to show a more Priorat-inspired profile. A serious wine at an extremely friendly price.
